How to Knit a Cowl

I made this cowl during Christmas break.
This is the first cowl I have ever made.
I came up with the pattern on my own.
This is different than most patterns because it is knitted flat using straight needles.

Supplies I used:
Sensations Rainbow classic yarn its a bulky 12 ply yarn
Straight Knitting needles size US8/ 5.0mm

Here is the pattern that I came up with:
First off you want to know that this is a straight pattern that you will seam at the end.

Cast on 40 stitches
Knit 5 Purl 5 all the way across the needle
continue on to row 2

*Your row should always start with Knit 5 and end with Pearl 5*
Keep using this same Ribbed pattern until you reach your desired length.
I would wrap mine around my neck from to time time to see if it was a good length for me.

This is a picture of what my cowl looked like up close laying flat.

I continued knitting until my flat piece measured about 25 inches.
When you get to your desired length go ahead & cast off your project with a long tail.

Then bring together & line up the 2 ends of your flat knitted piece.
Match the knit stitches together & the pearl stitches together.
Now stitch them up with your long tail from top to bottom.
This is a picture of me knitting that seam.
Here is my finished cowl.
I am loving it!
I hope this pattern makes sense.
I read it out loud to myself about 20 times.
Please feel free to leave comments or ask questions.
Happy Knitting!

  1. I haven't jumped on the cowl bandwagon yet (although the are all the rage at the yarn shop where I work). I like your take on it. The 5x5 rib is nice looking!
